Ending a marriage is a difficult decision for New Jersey couples, but sometimes, it is the best thing for both parties involved. However, it’s not always easy to figure out if divorce is the right solution. Thankfully there are certain common factors that can help indicate whether or not divorce is best for your situation.

Abuse

Physical abuse refers to any type of violence, such as hitting, kicking or shoving. Emotional abuse can be just as damaging and includes behaviors such as name-calling, putting down your accomplishments or making you feel like you’re not good enough. There are other lesser-known types of abuse that can happen in a marriage such as sexual, financial, legal or digital abuse.

Your partner should make you feel safe, loved and respected. If they are not treating you well, then divorce may be the best solution to protect yourself and your children.

Infidelity

If your partner has been unfaithful, it can be incredibly difficult to rebuild trust. In some cases, people are able to move past infidelity and have a stronger relationship than ever before. However, in other cases, the betrayal is too much to overcome, and divorce is the best solution.

Addiction

Addiction can take many forms, including alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling and sex addiction. If your partner is addicted to something, it can put a strain on your relationship and make it difficult to communicate or trust one another. In some cases, addiction can be overcome with the help of therapy, but in other cases, it may be too difficult to change. If your partner is unwilling to seek help for their addiction, it may be best to divorce them and protect yourself from the damage they are causing.

If your partner is constantly spending more money than you have and is unwilling to change their spending habits, it can put a major strain on your finances. This form of compulsive behavior, which can take many forms such as shopping addiction, is incredibly frustrating and may lead to arguments and resentment. If you have tried to work on the financial problems but your partner is unwilling to make any changes, divorce may be the best solution.

These are just a few of the many reasons why people may seek divorce. Of course, everyone’s situation is different, and only you can decide if divorce is the right solution for your particular case.
